15 minEasyYour phone leaks more about you than your browser does — location, contacts, and an advertising ID that ties your apps together. A few settings close most of it.
- Install updates promptly. Most real-world attacks use flaws that were already patched.
- Audit permissions app by app. Prefer "while using the app" over "always" for location.
- Kill ad tracking. iOS: turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track. Android: delete your advertising ID.
- Use a 6+ digit passcode. Full-disk encryption is on by default on modern iOS and Android, but only a real passcode makes it mean anything.
- Turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi scanning when you're out — both are used to track foot traffic.
- Encrypt your laptop. FileVault on macOS, BitLocker on Windows, LUKS on Linux.
- Use an encrypted messenger for anything you wouldn't post publicly.
