Hiding your network activity
15 minModerateYour internet provider and any network you join can see which sites you connect to, even over HTTPS. A VPN doesn't remove that visibility — it moves it to the VPN company. So only use one you'd trust with the full list.
- Choose a paid, audited VPN. Free VPNs monetise your traffic. Look for a published no-logs audit.
- Turn on the kill switch so traffic stops if the tunnel drops.
- Encrypt your DNS. Enable DNS-over-HTTPS in your browser or OS — this hides the domain names you look up from the local network.
- On public Wi-Fi: stick to HTTPS, disable auto-connect and file sharing, and never click through a certificate warning.
- For real anonymity, use Tor Browser, not a VPN. It's slower, but it's the only common tool built so that no single party sees both who you are and what you visit.
- Don't stack Tor on top of a VPN unless you know precisely why. It usually makes things worse, not better.
