Private browsing

5 minEasy

Private windows are useful for exactly one thing: keeping a session off your own device. Good for shared computers, second accounts, and checking prices without your cookies attached.

Incognito is not invisibility. It stops your device from saving history, cookies, and form data. It does not hide you from your internet provider, your employer or school network, or the sites you visit.

  1. Open a private window: Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + N in Chrome, Edge, and Brave; Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + P in Firefox and Safari.
  2. Don't sign into your main accounts inside it — that re-links the session to you instantly.
  3. Close every private window when you're done. One left open keeps the session alive.
  4. For day-to-day privacy, change your default browser to Firefox or Brave and turn on strict tracking protection.
  5. Set search to DuckDuckGo or Startpage.
  6. Use separate browser profiles — or Firefox container tabs — so work, shopping, and social logins can't see each other.
